Vale John Goodman
Crusaders Cricket Australia would like to extend our sympathies to the Goodman family and Chipperfield-Clarendon CC on the passing of John. A dear friend to the Crusaders for many years and a great member of the cricketing community in Buckinghamshire. Below is the obituary from Ian Scholefield:
John scored for Chipperfield and Clarendon CC in the Thames Valley League for around 60 years. Buckinghamshire Minor County CC also enjoyed his services for a long period. He is was an Honorary Vice President and on the current Scorers Register for the Club Cricket Conference (CCC),
He also toured Australia on at least three occasions with the CCC, which is where he first came in contact with Crusaders Cricket Australia. We used him on eight of our UK and Europe tours as our prime scorer. This also resulted in him in taking up the pen also for Cricket Victoria on their youth tours to UK. He enjoyed about three seasons for Ashburton CC in Melbourne. Close relationships were developed with all of these Australian organisations.
John was well-known at MCC and Lords where he scored in a one-day international on one occasion. He also scored during September each year at the Lord’s number two oval. Amongst the many other clubs he performed the vital role were Royal Household CC and Sir Michael Parkinson’s XI.
Earlier in the 2019 season in UK he was still scoring on average 4 matches a week.
He revelled in keeping records of the games which he scored. I asked him back in May “What is your record of scoring games and centuries now? Have you kept a record of how many grounds that you have scored at.”
His response “I don't know how many games I have scored other than for Chipperfield where the number stands at about 1,800. Now up to 738 centuries, only one so far this season. Grounds are now at 502. Bucks CCC made a presentation to me on the 500th last year. I think if you look on the BCCC
website you might see a picture of me receiving my 500 cap.”
